Sweet Belem, named after the suburb of Lisbon where
owners John and Lina are originally from, is located within the
heavily Portuguese influenced area of Petersham. The smallish shop
space (it seats 30 inside with room for another six outside) is
very cosy and clean and, with the Portuguese style tiling and pictures
adorning the walls, it exudes a Lisbonense feel.
Opening in October 2003, Sweet Belem has steadily built a reputation
for quality, both in service and for the various pastry creations
that are prepared by John on the premises. In 2005 alone they have
been featured in Good Living magazine on two occasions and will
be featured during The Food Lovers Guide To Australia on SBS TV
during October.
Of their pastry creations, the most popular is the Portuguese Custard
Tart (which any member of the Belaroma front office staff will tell
you are the best in Australia !!), of which more than 3000 are made
and sold each week. The menu is described as ‘a mix of genuine
traditional Portuguese meets modern Australian style’, producing
a unique range of pastries and desserts.
When looking for a coffee to match the quality of food served at
Sweet Belem, John and Lina decided on Belaroma. When asked what
they liked about Belaroma Coffee, the answer was quick and to the
point, ‘Everything!’ followed by an explanation, ‘the
aroma, the texture – it’s so creamy, and the perfect
flavour. You feel like you’re having coffee!’ John said.
With convenient street parking nearby, Sweet Belem is a great place
to tempt your taste buds with some delicious sweet pastries or relax
in a friendly atmosphere with a great cup of coffee. John and Lina
look forward to your visit.
