On the Castlereagh River in the Warrumbungle Mountains, half way between Brisbane and Melbourne and 465 kilometres north-west of Sydney, Coonabarabran styles itself as the 'Astronomy Capital of Australia' due to its proximity (24km) to Siding Springs, home to the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. It is a popular stopover for people on route to the Sunshine State for holidays and vice-versa, and also a good base for bushwalking, camping, mountain climbing and abseiling in the Warrambungle NP.
Cardians Coffee Lounge is located between the Clock and the Bridge and is a popular café for locals and tourists alike. The Chef/Owner Katrina Bowman has been welcoming customers since 1996 and she and her staff are committed to providing friendly, personal service. An interesting feature of her café is its display of local art and Katrina has added a further dimension to the café experience by having antiques for sale.

The café seats 40 inside and 12 outside in its courtyard. There is disabled access and toilets and plenty of convenient street parking. Families appreciate the fact that Katrina has ensured the café is child-friendly with plenty of toys to keep the young ones amused and even well-behaved pets are welcome in the courtyard !
They serve a very popular all day breakfast starting from 8am. Other fare includes light meals, a great specials board and yummy homemade cakes. They also open for dinner and functions on request.
Serving great coffee has become increasingly important to Katrina and she made the change to Belaroma’s Blend No 25 in 2004. She comments: “Belaroma supply a consistently fresh product that makes great coffee. They also provide excellent additional products like frappes and syrups – and, importantly with suppliers, they are always easy to deal with”.
